piano sonatas
for piano solo
The piano sonatas are pieces in one movement and derive their name from the meaning of the Latin word «sonare» which means «to sound». They are sound-pieces, or more accurately: fade-pieces. The attentive listening into the many-layered, slowly changing and fading sound is more important than the sudden appearance of the tone-sound. Only by expansing and vanishing into silence can «sound» come to the fore. When played with much pedal, the piano has the wonderful intrinsic feature of containing an immense room for the sound to linger on, hence to become the sound of the tonal subtext. For it does not simply let sound fade away. It produces multilayered and holistic resonances by inviting strings into resonance which haven't been hit.
Each sonata is a room to dwell in. This music invites the listener to engage in a different hearing: from tone-listening to sound-listening. Listen to the becoming in the fading, the becoming through the fading.
Die Klaviersonaten sind einsätzige Stücke und beziehen ihren Namen aus der Bedeutung des lateinischen "sonare", klingen. Es sind Klangstücke, oder genauer gesagt: Verkling-Stücke. Denn das Verklingen, das achtsame Hineinlauschen in den vielschichtigen, sich langsam ändernden Klang, ist mir wichtiger als das plötzliche Erscheinen des Klanges. Am Anfang ist das Ereignis mehr Ton als Klang. Erst mit seinem Ausdehnen und Entschwinden tritt der Klang in den Vordergrund. Das Klavier hat, wenn es mit viel Pedal gespielt wird, die wunderbare Eigenschaft, dass es den Raum zum Nachklingen, zur eigentlichen Klangwerdung, bereits in sich trägt. Denn es lässt den Klang nicht nur ausklingen, es erzeugt in sich vielschichtige Resonanzen, wenn Saiten mitschwingen, die gar nicht angeschlagen wurden.
Diese Musik lädt also ein, ein anderes Hören auszuprobieren: Vom Ton-Hören zum Klang-Hören. Jede Sonate ist ein Raum, in dem man verweilen kann. Ein Verkling-Raum.
